Chapter 28

After the kids file into to their classrooms for the morning, Carmen and I investigate in the library. We compare Desirey’s list to my high school yearbook and put a small red x beside the names we find in both. We also mark who we remember seeing at the Warehouse with a circle, all kids we knew from college, not high school. The party seemed to be a townie gathering. I draw a line through the names of people we were with—me and Chase, Carmen, Chloe, and Sharla. That’s five people from the mile-long list we will not need to look up.

We make quick work of it, then Carmen takes the yearbook and the list back to her office, where nobody is tracking keystrokes. I churn through the day, shelving books, helping students.
